Elementary School Students Try Their Hand at Being Nurses at the “KSF Summer Science Event”
On August 5, the “King Skyfront Summer Science Event,” organized by the Kawasaki City Coastal Area Management DIvision, was held, and many elementary school students participated in the science activities presented by local organizations. As part of Project CHANGE’s activities, we collaborated with the Kawasaki City Nursing Association to offer a nursing experience program. Following the nurses’ instructions, the children used stethoscopes to listen to heartbeats and breathing sounds in the lungs, gaining a tangible sense of “being alive.” They also experienced routine tasks performed by nurses, such as taking accurate body temperature readings and measuring arterial blood oxygen saturation using a pulse oximeter. By learning about heart function and the significance of oxygen saturation levels, they discovered simple care methods they could practice at home. The overwhelming majority of participants said it was “really interesting,” and we believe the event was a great success. Three high school students were instrumental in making this happen. Having spent the morning studying nursing to prepare for the event, they played a vital role in energizing the atmosphere—perhaps because the elementary school students found it easy to talk to them. We hope that as many participants as possible will develop an interest in the nursing profession as a result of this experience.
