A paper on mRNA-based combination therapy for inflammatory osteoarthritis has been published.
One of the primary causes of walking difficulties in the elderly is osteoarthritis. There is still no fundamental cure, and treatment typically involves symptomatic management with anti-inflammatory analgesics or joint replacement surgery. A research group led by Prof. Keiji Iitaka of Osaka University, participating in Project CHANGE, has collaborated with a pharmaceutical company to develop an mRNA drug showing effective results for osteoarthritis of the knee in a rat model. Clinical trials are set to begin soon in Australia. In a paper published in Pharmaceutics, the group further evaluated the efficacy of this mRNA drug combined with an IL-1 receptor antagonist against inflammatory osteoarthritis of the knee in rats.
