Effects of Age-Friendly Education on Helping Intention and Attitude for Older Adults of Elementary Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study in Japan

Summary:

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a comprehensive, age-friendly educational program in Japanese elementary schools on sixth-grade students’ intentions to engage in helping behaviors, recognition of the need for help, knowledge of dementia, and attitudes toward people with dementia. The program comprised the following three components: raising awareness; understanding older adults, including those with dementia; and learning about community support for older adults. A quasi-experimental design with an intervention group and a control group was used. The intervention group showed significant improvements compared with the control group regarding intention to help, recognition of the need for help, knowledge of dementia, and attitudes toward people with dementia. In conclusion, a comprehensive educational program that combines knowledge acquisition and experiential learning can effectively improve young students’ attitudes and intentions to help. Future studies should refine educational approaches to promote supportive behaviors toward older adults and examine changes in helping behaviors.
