Dr. Lim, Discoverer of MSC-derived Exosomes, Discusses Current Status of Elucidating Mechanisms of Action for Practical Use of Exosomes

Summary:

On December 13, Dr. Lim, who spoke at the Project CHANGE symposium, gave a presentation on the practical applications of extracellular vesicles (EVs) including exosomes, discussing the manufacturing challenges and the clarification of mechanisms necessary for their resolution. He discovered exosomes derived from human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in 2008 and established Paracrine Therapeutics in 2016. Currently, he is conducting clinical trials on an exosome-containing ointment targeting psoriasis.

He highlighted the advantages of EVs, citing their safety and stability, and mentioned that he is in the process of establishing a method for producing uniform exosomes. However, he pointed out that quality control remains a significant challenge, emphasizing the need for control over the manufacturing process. Recent studies have explored the mechanisms by which EVs act on cells, confirming therapeutic effects through local administration. Dr. Lim also mentioned the possibility that EVs may exert their effects extracellularly to demonstrate therapeutic efficacy.
