What are the challenges of nursing and caregiving in an aging society? Visiting class for high school students in the social welfare department
In the Project CHANGE, a presentation was held for third-year students in the Department of Welfare at Kawasaki Municipal Kawasaki High School, aiming to provide high school students aspiring to work in nursing and caregiving with an engineering perspective amid Japan's declining birthrate and aging population. Based on their practical experiences in caregiving, the students identified issues in Japan's nursing and caregiving sectors and plan to explore solutions with researchers and nurses in the next session.
Since the 2022 academic year, the project has focused on reducing the burden on medical institutions by developing technologies and social systems for better lifestyles, while also fostering the next generation of talent through outreach classes in high schools. During this session, the deputy project leader, Makoto Shimazaki, served as the lecturer, explaining the issues of increasing patient numbers and the shortage of healthcare workers due to the aging population. He emphasized the need for developing care products for community and home healthcare, as well as improving citizens' caregiving abilities, and noted that there is considerable room for improvement in the nursing and caregiving fields, with engineering technology offering potential solutions.
