Prof. Takanori Ichiki: Innovations in Nursing from Kawasaki

Professor Takanori Ichiki of the University of Tokyo advocates the need for innovation that harnesses the power of technology to solve the nursing workforce shortage. He is the project leader of Kawasaki City's national project, “CHANGE,” which aims to realize a healthy and long-lived society and solve issues in the medical field. The project aims to introduce technologies and services that support nursing care, especially for the increasing nursing needs of the elderly.

Professor Ichiki believes that the four T's of Tolerance, Compassion, Technology, and Human Resources are necessary to reduce the burden on the nursing field. It is important to observe actual nursing work and determine which tasks are burdensome. Young researcher Yukihiro Kanda accompanies nurses to observe the daily tasks of hospital nursing with the eyes of an engineering researcher.

Kawasaki City is the only area where a nursing association exists, making it easy to gather opinions from the nursing field. Professor Ichiki continues to take on the challenge of developing easy-to-use medical devices to meet the increasing demand for home nursing care.
