An Outreach Class for Second-Year students in the Science Department of KST -Kawasaki City High School for Science and Technology

On November 29, an outreach class was held for second-year students in the Science Department of KST – Kawasaki City High School for Science and Technology. This initiative is part of Project CHANGE, which aims to nurture the talented next generation. It highlights the importance of applying knowledge from the care field to students in this department, many of whom go on to pursue higher education in science and engineering.

The outreach class was organized and led by Dr. Ayumi Igarashi, Associate Professor, and Dr. Manami Takaoka, Project Assistant Professor from the Graduate School of Medicine (Division of Health Sciences and Nursing) at The University of Tokyo, along with Dr. Yukihiro Kanda, Project Scientist at Ichiki Lab in iCONM. The key focus is to integrate elements of nursing, which involves working with people, into scientific and engineering research that primarily deals with inanimate objects. We began with an overview of Project CHANGE, which combines nursing and engineering, followed by reading a letter from a home care patient. Next, we identified the essential issues surrounding the patient and conducted a situation analysis through research-based learning using tablet PCs. We plan to continue working on a solution in March next year.
