iCONM/CHANGE Public Lecture: "Insights into Engineering Collaboration from the Realities of Nursing" Held

On March 2, we hosted an online public lecture as part of iCONM/CHANGE. The nursing field often involves multiple simultaneous missions, presenting complex challenges where nurses are constantly required to make quick judgments and respond appropriately. In this lecture, participants viewed training videos produced by the Kawasaki Nursing Association, with explanations provided by nursing professionals, followed by discussions involving business executives and engineering researchers.

The video content consisted of scenarios depicting: 1) daytime multiple challenges in the ward, 2) night-time ward situations, and 3) on-call scenarios for home nursing at night. Each scenario was explained by key figures: Noriko Motodate (Deputy Director and Head of Nursing at St. Marianna University Hospital), Sayaka Sakashita (Deputy Head of Nursing at Soseikai Aso General Hospital), and Hiroko Watanabe (Deputy Director of Kawasaki Home Nursing Station).

During the panel discussion, we were joined by Isao Shirasaki (Chairperson of Lilium Otsuka Co., Ltd.), Ema Onishi (Representative Director of Kawasaki FM), and Yukihiro Kanda (Researcher at iCONM), who actively exchanged views on personnel management and product development from the perspective of general businesses.

Participants gained a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by nurses who must make life-critical decisions in a nursing environment where unexpected actions are often required due to patient emergencies and nurse calls. There was a shared sentiment among attendees that we hope to leverage engineering solutions to improve the systems that necessitate working in the dark at night and responding to requests from patients for 24 hours a day.

Thank you to everyone who participated!
