Treatment of eye disease with intramuscular injection of mRNA vaccine
Medical Care CB News reported the results of a paper on the creation of a therapeutic vaccine for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by a research team led by Prof. Satoshi Uchida of Science Tokyo in CHANGE R&D Theme 2. AMD is one of the causes of blindness, a disease in which abnormal proliferation of capillaries in the fundus of the eye causes the retina, which corresponds to the film in a camera, to become bumpy, and prevents images from forming. The current treatment is intraocular injections of antibody drugs that inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), but many people stop coming to the clinic because of the hassle of receiving intraocular injections once a month to control the progression of the disease. Without treatment, the disease may progress and lead to blindness. The key point of the method presented here is that, like the corona vaccine, it is an intramuscular injection. Although the results have only been obtained in mice, it is hoped that the vaccine will be introduced to the market quickly after clinical trials.
